Action to Restore Our Shoreline: Canon Hong Kong Held the Annual Beach Cleaning Volunteer Service
Adhering with corporate philosophy “Kyosei”, Canon Hong Kong Corporate Volunteer Team has been always committed to contribute to the community. Since 2016, the Team has been organizing the annual clean up volunteer service at beach and hiking trail to restore our nature beauty. This year, the Team joined with The Green Earth (TGE) to hold the annual clean up service at a remote shoreline located in Shek Pai Wan at Lamma Island on 12 Dec.
On the service day, 20 staff and their family members formed the Volunteer Team. Lead by TGE, the Team first gathered at Aberdeen Pier to take a 30-minute boat ride to Lamma Island. After landing, the Team hiked for another 30-minutes to remote shoreline for service. A total of 15 bags of waste weighting nearly 72kg was collected. After that, the Team also assisted the “Refuse Characteristic Survey” by sorting, counting & weighting the refuse collected. Most of the refuse collected are plastic waste, including beverage bottles, disposable cutlery, straws, Styrofoam pellets and fishnet debris. The result will help TGE to review the latest marine refuse status and revert to the government, serving as a reference for waste reduction strategic and measures.
Throughout this service, the team not only learned more about the coastal ecology, but also the importance of beach clean-up actions and strengthened their determination of waste reduction at source.
