Canon Hong Kong Received Two Prestigious Awards at the Ming Pao ESG Awards 2023
Sustainable development has become mainstream in global markets. Companies' environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance has been more concerned to governments, regulators, corporations, investors, and the general public. As a Responsible Corporate Citizen, Canon is dedicated to creating a better world through robust and equitable business practices.
This year, Canon Hongkong Company Limited (Canon Hong Kong) is proud to be recognized for its commitment and execution of ESG, receiving the "Excellence in ESG Innovation Award " and the " Elite of Sustainability Performance Award" by the Ming Pao ESG Awards.Mr. Kazuhiro Ozawa, President and CEO of Canon Hong Kong, shared "Adhere to our corporate philosophy of ‘Kyosei’, which emphasizes the importance of harmonious coexistence and mutual prosperity among people, communities, and the environment. We recognized our essential role in addressing complex social concerns such as climate change, natural disasters, poverty, and inequality as shared in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations. All of the above greatly influence our approach to ESG performance. We integrate sustainability elements into our operational activities and reinvest business profits into local communities and environmental conservation. In times of need, we provide humanitarian support to people facing harsh conditions and natural disasters.”
Canon Hong Kong has also been pioneering sustainability efforts since 2009, when it launched the Ink Cartridge Recycling Program, and placed over 300 recycling boxes across Hong Kong districts to collect empty ink cartridges. In 2011, the program was extended to the local education sector with the “Canon x McDull Inter-school Ink Cartridge Recycling Competition” for primary and secondary schools. Over the years, this program has successfully collected over 252,000 ink cartridges, recycled more than 5.8 tons of plastics, and reduced over 8.8 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the amount absorbed by 383 trees annually. Canon Hong Kong also possesses a volunteer team to support various CSR and Environmental activities inviting its staff to actively participate such as Blood Donation Days, Fundraising and Food Donations for the underprivileged, Imaging for Fun Workshops, Tree Planting, Coastal and Hiking Trail cleanups. These initiatives not only raise awareness, but also contribute to the community and preservation of natural ecosystems.
The Ming Pao ESG Awards, jointly organized by the Ming Pao Newspaper and the Institute of ESG and Benchmark, aim to recognize Hong Kong enterprises that demonstrate outstanding ESG performance and make positive contributions to society. A panel of judges from various sectors, the government and academia assesses the companies' sustainability strategies, implementation and disclosure of progress in choosing individual award winners.
