Canon Officially Launches the New Compact VLOG Interchangeable Lens Camera EOS R50 and
the Compact telephoto zoom lens RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM
HONG KONG, 16th March, 2023 — Canon today announced the New Compact VLOG Interchangeable Lens Camera EOS R50 and the Compact telephoto zoom lens RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM are available for sale. The small and capable enough EOS R50 is to be brought everywhere for next generation content creator to record vlogs and expands their versatility of creations for the world!
The ultra-compact 375g1 EOS R50 is designed with vlog shooting in mind and provides non-cropped high quality 4K UHD 25p/30p movie from 6K oversampling and movie for close-up demo mode to make vlogging simple. It is equipped with a high speed 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC X Image processor to realize high speed continuous shooting of 15 FPS2 (electronic shutter3) with high image quality. Besides, EOS R50 features EOS iTR AF X originated from EOS R3, delivering high performance Subject Recognition and AF tracking of People, Animals4 and Vehicles5. The new auto imaging functions such as “Creative Bracketing” and “Advanced A+” are also introduced.
Together on the same day Canon also announced RF-S Lens Series - RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM, a focal length of 88-336mm (equivalent focal length at 35mm format) which further highlights the benefit of its compact optical design and expands the RF lens lineup, providing the content creators with more high-performance and affordable choice with greater room for creation.

EOS Movie for vlogging
EOS R50 is the smallest and the lightest EOS R Mirrorless Camera6 with a high-speed 24.2MP APS-C size Canon CMOS Sensor combined with high-speed DIGIC X digital image processor, enabling professional EOS Movie capability for online content creators. EOS R50 supports high-quality non-cropped 4K UHD 25p/30p (6K oversampling) movies and non-cropped 100p/120p Full HD movie can also be recorded for easy capture lifestyle movies.
To make vlogging more convenient, EOS R50 features the “Movie for close-up demo” mode which quickly switches focus to the subject closest to the camera, such as a product placed in front of the camera, making the camera ideal for product introductions or review videos. EOS R50 also features "Movie IS Mode” to corrects shake when shooting handheld for natural-looking vlogs. The 5-Axis Movie Digital IS brings more effective stabilization when using with IS-equipped RF/RF-S Lens through coordinated control. Moreover, EOS R50 also features Movie Auto Level Function7 to correct for tilted level tends to happen when shooting hand-held automatically.
To facilitate playback of movies on various social media, the camera supports new Aspect Markers (e.g., 2.35:1; 1:1; 9:16, 13:9, 14:9) to make content that fits your favorite social media seamlessly. Using the visual guides of preferred aspect ratios while shooting to better frame and compose the shots. EOS R50 also supports vertical moving recording for vertical playback of movie on Smartphones. New Focus Breathing correction8 is also added to correct changes in the field of view due to change of focus distance, and new Recording Emphasis to display a flashing red outer frame on screen during recording.
EOS R50 supports shooting 10-bit HDR PQ (Rec. ITU-R BT.2100(PQ)) H.265 Movie. The Built-in movie compression transcodes 4K/FHD IPB Movie9 into FHD IPB Light movie of smaller size, which makes transferring to social media smoother. Delivering of high quality FHD 30p video for live streaming10 is also supported via USB with UVC/UAC compatibility, “AF for close up demos” also available when connecting via UVC/UAC. The maximum continuous recording time has been extended to 1 hour. EOS R50 also comes with a Multi-Function Shoe that supports digital sound recording for high-quality sound when creating videos.
Ultra-Compact, High Speed and High Image Quality
EOS R50 is capable of providing up to approximately 15FPS11 high-speed continuous shooting with electronic shutter12 (or up to 12FPS13 with electronic 1st curtain shutter) with Auto Focus/Auto Exposure Tracking. EOS R50 offers a maximum 1/8000 second for electronic shutter and supports Bulb mode. EOS R50 also supports HDR PQ high dynamic range shooting and 10-bit HEIF recording format to cater the popularity of HDR display. The built-in “Digital Lens Optimizer” (DLO) and “Clarity” setting enables output of high quality and ready-to-use JPEG images.
Taking the advantages of the DIGIC X digital image processor, EOS R50 also realizes a wide standard ISO range of 100-32000, expandable to ISO 51200, to help deliver low-noise, high-quality images even in low- light situations. To make difficult conditions easier and more beautiful, EOS R50 brings new "Creative Bracket" and "Advanced A+" features to the A+ Scene Intelligent Auto modes. The “Creative Bracket” function will automatically record 3 images with various brightness and color tones in addition to the normal image with a single shutter release, providing multiple selections for quick sharing. The new "Advanced A+" function will automatically captures multiple images and merges with advanced image processing when challenging scenes such as backlit subjects, high contrast, close-up, etc are detected by the camera. Appealing images can be obtained without the need for post-processing. With the Hybrid Auto Mode in EOS R50, it will automatically create movie form 2-4 sec clips recorded immediately before each photo is taken, VLOG can be created easily without movie editing skill.
EOS R50 also incorporates the "Depth Composition" feature, which automatically merges focus bracketed images taken with focus bracketing into an image that is clearly in focus from front to back, allowing users to check the composition results on site. In addition, EOS R50 has several Creative Tools with the SCN Mode includes Self-Portrait Mode with the smooth skin effect, Panorama Shot for capturing high-resolution panorama images, and a new "Subject Blur Guide" in Panning Mode to help users master the panning speed.
Advanced subject recognition and tracking auto focus inherited from the renowned EOS R3
With Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, EOS R50 offers extensive autofocus coverage at up to 100% of the entire image area14 and 651 AF zones, making precise focusing and tracking of subjects possible even when they move to the edge of the frame and allows for greater compositional freedom. EOS R50 features EOS iTR15 AF X inherited from EOS R3, its AF algorithm developed using Deep Learning technology provides high performance Subject Recognition and AF tracking of people, animals and vehicles. The New “Auto” Subject Detection detects and selects people, animals or vehicles as subject automatically, which providing users more flexibility when shooting different subjects.
The EOS R50 shares the same AF Algorithm with the EOS R3. Its advanced AF tracking system allows simply “grabbing” the parts of a subject to be tracked using the 1-point AF or zone AF for the camera to determine the optimum tracking position and perform subject detection and tracking. Besides, “Whole Area Tracking Servo AF” is possible from any one of the 8 “AF Area” modes, including 1-point AF or Flexible Zone AF, for flexible AF operability. It can be turned on or off during AF or continuous shooting16. When shooting with EVF, AF Point position can be selected with “Touch and Drag AF” or detected subjects can be switched by tapping the LCD screen.
Enhanced Operability and Connectivity
EOS R50 features a high precision 0.39-inch 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with up to 120FPS display frame rate. With the “OVF simulation view assist” function, EOS R50 is able to reproduce the view of an SLR optical viewfinder by displaying more natural highlights and dark gradations with HDR technology. EOS R50 also equipped with a high definition 3.0-inch 1.62M-dot side-opening Vari-angle Clear View II LCD Touch Monitor, offering greater flexibility and convenience for more challenging low or high angles. The “Silent Shutter Function” to enable one touch switch to silent shooting is also included.
Designed as a compact VLOG camera, EOS R50 has an ultra-fast start-up time of 0.4 seconds17. The camera comes with a built-in retractable flash with Guide Number of 6 (m, ISO 100) and supports E-TTL II Flash Metering. This flash will come in handy in low-light situations or provide fill flash in backlit condition. The camera is also equipped with the Next Generation Multi-Function Shoe enhances communication capabilities and power supply18 functionality. With the built-in USB-C (Hi-Speed USB 2.0) digital terminal, recharging battery and supplying power with USB-PD is supported which further extend the creative possibility. The wired connection to Camera Connect App with full function is supported for iPhone19 and AndroidTM smartphone.
EOS R50 also provides various convenient network and connectivity options, allowing image creators to efficiently transfer image files. The camera has a built-in high-speed 802.11b/g/n (2.4Ghz) Wi-Fi for wireless network transfer to Canon’s Camera Connect App on smart devices and EOS Utility. WPA3-Personal is newly supported for added security on wireless networks. In addition, the built-in Bluetooth® low energy technology is available for easy connection with Smartphone. The auto transfer of photos and videos to image.canon cloud service makes instant backup and sharing effortless in real time.
