Canon Hong Kong sponsored the Education Hike: Climate Discovery 2018 at Tai O
Tai O, known as “Venice of Hong Kong”, is a popular tourist attraction on Lantau Island where it is famous for its seafood, stilt house and fishing culture. However, not many of us know that it is also the area most affected by climate change in Hong Kong. Whenever there is typhoon, the flooding situation in low-lying area of Tai O is getting worse and worse. Environmentalists foresee that Tai O will be unlivable or even disappear in coming decades due to the rises of sea level and more frequent happening of extreme weather. Therefore, in order to raise the public awareness of climate change impact towards Tai O area, CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL) organized the charitable Education Hike: Climate Discovery 2018 at Tai O on 18 March.
The hike is being held in 2nd year which has attracted an increasing number of participants from 30 to 180 people. Participants start walking from Tai O Road to Keung Shan Country Trail and then finished at Tai O Town Hall. The route is about 6.8km long with a medium level of challenge for families enjoyment. A total of HK$110,000 donation was raised and would be used to support CCIL in developing local programs to tackle climate change.
Canon Hong Kong (Canon HK), as one of the Carbon Smart Sponsor, sent a team of 17 staff to actively participate in the hike. They learnt climate change-related knowledge throughout the checkpoints along the route including environmental and heritage conservations, Tai O fisheries & disaster resilience. Participants also practiced “Leave No Trace” hiking habit and volunteered to collect rubbish along the hike. After the walk, there were some game booths & closing ceremony held at Tai O Town Hall and guided tour service of Tai O Stilt House for more in-depth understanding about the living in Tai O.
