Canon Hong Kong Corporate Volunteer Team Becomes Tree Surveyors to Preserve the Mai Po Nature Reserve

Canon Hongkong Company Limited (Canon Hong Kong) has always been committed to the corporate philosophy of “Kyosei”, actively engaging in various activities to achieve a positive impact on society, with environmental conservation being essential. As the corporate member of World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong (WWF-HK) for 21 consecutive years, our Corporate Volunteer Team was invited to act as tree surveyors for the first time in Mai Po Nature Reserve on 23 November to assist in recording the condition of the trees for managing the habitat more effectively and contributing to the conservation of the natural environment.

Trees are one of the vital resources within the reserve, providing excellent habitats and stopover points for wild and migratory birds and maintaining ecological balance. Therefore, the staff of the Mai Po Nature Reserve need to regularly monitor the condition of those trees. However, due to the vast area of the reserve, systematic tree management requires a large amount of manpower and time. We understand these difficulties and we are happy to help in every possible way. Together with Canon Engineering Hong Kong Company Ltd. (CEHK) and Canon Electronic Business Machines (H.K.) Company Ltd. (CEBM), we formed a 23-member corporate volunteer team. Under the guidance of the staff at Mai Po, the volunteers not only enhanced their understanding of tree ecology but also assisted in collecting tree data, such as measuring the height, trunk diameter, and crown width of trees. They also carefully observed and recorded the health status of the trees, such as flowering, fruiting, bark peeling, fungal infection, or decay.

Mr. Kazuhiro Ozawa, President and CEO of Canon Hong Kong, has participated in preservation activities at Mai Po for 3 consecutive years. He said, " As one of the areas with the richest biodiversity in Hong Kong, Mai Po Nature Reserve is of great conservation and scientific research value. I am pleased with my colleagues for their hard work and enthusiasm. They not only showcased the power of teamwork but also embodied Canon's philosophy of “Kyosei”, contributing to environmental protection and the harmonious coexistence between human and nature."

Through this tree survey work, all volunteers expressed that the experience was valuable. Not only did they get to interact closely with the trees, but they were also pleased to help reducing the workload of the staff. This further solidified the commitment of Canon Hong Kong to actively participating in environmental conservation volunteer work, continuously fulfilling corporate social responsibility, and caring for and giving back to society.
