Canon Hong Kong calls for Mooncakes Donation and Mooncake Boxes Recycling to bring a Greener Mid-Autumn Festival

When it comes to Mid-Autumn celebration, it is all about reunion with your closest and loved ones, which many prepare mooncakes and gifts to express festive greetings. Yet, there is an ongoing concern of mooncake leftovers, food waste and excess packaging. To advocate an eco-friendly Mid-Autumn Festival, Canon Hongkong Company Limited (Canon Hong Kong) supports the Mooncakes Donation and Mooncake Boxes Recycling Campaign organized by Food Grace and Greeners Action respectively to reduce waste at source.

For the first time ever, Canon Hong Kong partners with Food Grace to sign the “Mid-Autumn Gift Wise Charter” which companies are encouraged to send mooncakes as gifts only when it is necessary as well as to consider any alternatives or low-carbon forms of festive blessings. To put the pledge into action, a tailor-made e-greeting card has been prepared for colleagues to share with customers and business partners. Staff are also encouraged to donate unopened and individually wrapped surplus mooncakes. All the surplus mooncakes collected will be donated to low-income families, the disabled, solitary elderly and social welfare organizations in various districts via Food Grace during the Mid-Autum Festival. Rolled out in 2015, more than 180,000 mooncakes have been collected and donated to people in need via this campaign. This year, over 200 collection points have been set up in various companies, residentials and shopping malls to encourage the public to create a caring and inclusive green environment.

Apart from mooncake leftovers, Canon Hong Kong also commits to reduce the packaging waste from mooncake boxes. Instead of simply discarding the boxes, we hope to give them a second life by joining the Mooncake Boxes Recycling Program of Greeners Action. All the paper and metal mooncake boxes collected will be recycled by Greeners Action and delivered to the government registered recyclers. Marking the 12th year of the program, over 70,000 mooncake boxes have been recycled and accumulated.

On this special and joyful occasion of Mid-Autumn Festival, Canon Hong Kong remains committed to promoting green festive culture and reducing wastage. While we appreciate the beauty of the moon, let us protect the exquisite beauty of Mother Nature by doing our bit for the environment!

Ms. Candy Mau, Assistant Director of Corporate Communications and General Administration Division, received the Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Canon Hong Kong from Mr. Argo Yeung, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of Community Leap.

Canon Hong Kong is honored to partner with Food Grace, taking practical actions to reduce waste and allocate resources efficiently to care those in need during the festive season.
