Canon officially launches the Ultra-fast F1.4 Hybrid Medium Telephoto RF Lens RF85mm F1.4 L VCM
HONG KONG, 26th September 2025 — Canon officially launches the RF85mm F1.4 L VCM, an ultra-fast F1.4 hybrid medium telephoto RF Lens. RF85mm F1.4 L VCM is the latest addition to the F1.4 L hybrid RF lens series, which features a unified exterior look, dimensions, optical/mechanical technologies and design concepts. The series now covers the whole range from 20mm ultra wide-angle to 85mm medium telephoto with an aperture of f/1.4, meeting the increasing demands of creators who keep switching between photos and video.
Exceptional Image Quality
RF85mm F1.4 L VCM’s 85mm focal length provides a perspective with minimal distortion and allows the subject to be expressed in three dimensions while keeping the background uncluttered, as well as to capture the natural expressions of people at an optimal distance when shooting portraits, so it is highly acclaimed for portrait photography. With its medium telephoto range and large aperture, RF85mm F1.4 L VCM transforms the art of portraiture into a seamless and enchanting experience, allowing user to effortlessly capture the beauty of the subjects.
RF85mm F1.4 L VCM’s newly developed 14 elements in 10 groups optical design takes full advantage of the large diameter mount and short back focus of RF Mount. It uses 1 Glass-Molded (GMo) Aspherical lens suppresses spherical aberration and comatic aberration, achieving high image quality across the entire screen even at wide open aperture. 1 UD lens is effectively positioned to achieve high image quality with suppressed color blurring from the center of the screen to the periphery. ASC (Air Sphere Coating) is also applied on 2 lens surfaces to reduce lens flare and ghosting even in backlit conditions.
With its wide f/1.4 aperture and 11-blade circular diaphragm, the RF85mm F1.4 L VCM creates soft creamy, cinematic bokeh that adds depth, mood, and emotion to every frame. The large aperture also enables faster shutter speeds and lower ISO settings, allowing you to preserve natural skin tones and fine detail even as the light fades.
High Speed and Quiet Auto Focus
The RF85mm F1.4 L VCM uses a rear-focusing system, and the four-element focus lens group is actuated by a high thrust VCM (Voice Coil Motor)[1] to deliver smooth, precise, and near-silent autofocus during video recording, empowering photographers and videographers to film every cinematic moment with confidence. The focus breathing is suppressed in all focus positions optically, Focus Breathing Correction[2] is also supported to further reduce focus breathing during movie shooting.
RF85mm F1.4 L VCM provides 0.12x maximum magnification at 0.75m minimum focusing distance. It captures compelling imagery from edge to edge, that is sure to capture attention.
Intuitively Designed
RF85mm F1.4 L VCM adopts the same high mobility design as other F1.4 VCM prime lenses with a length of approx. 99.3mm, a diameter of approx. 76.5mm and a common 67mm filter size. This uniform design lets you switch between lenses without readjusting the rig, keeping your filmmaking workflow fast and effortless. Even though it is a large-aperture, medium telephoto lens, it weighs approx. 636g, 33% lighter than the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM. It also features an Iris Ring[3] which supports 1/32-stop aperture adjustment during movie shooting[4]. The iris ring enables smooth aperture control without any clicks, making the lenses more comfortable to use even during location shootings.
RF85mm F1.4 L VCM features a high level of durability and shock resistance with dust-and-water-resistant[5], along with a fluorine coating on the foremost lens surface to reduce the attachment of dust, oil, and water droplets. It also features one customizable Lens Function (L-Fn) button, providing quick access to essential functions such as autofocus, exposure, and more, allowing the users to effortlessly adapt to changing scenes to capture the perfect shot.

The new RF85mm F1.4 L VCM is now available for sale, and its suggested retail price is HKD$12,280.

[1] This lens emits weak magnetism, if users with implanted cardiac pacemakers or other medical device experience any abnormalities, stop using the product immediately and consult a doctor. When the lens is not attached to the camera or the power switch of the camera is in the off status when the lens is attached, shaking the lens may cause the internal lens group to shift and noise may occur, but this is not a malfunction. Although the internal lens group shifts due to vibration such as when the lens is carried, this will not affect aspects such as performance.
