Canon officially launches RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM
two Ultra-Fast f/1.4 RF lenses designed for hybrid shooting
HONGKONG, 23rd December 2024— Canon officially launches a duo of new compact ultra-fast f/1.4 RF lens designed for hybrid shooting, RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM. They will be an integral part of the hybrid shooters’ toolkit in addition to the previously released RF35mm F1.4 L VCM. These compact hybrid lenses are designed to work seamlessly and interchangeably with the RF35mm F1.4 L VCM. Like the RF35mm F1.4 L VCM, both lenses balance lightweight, compact bodies with stunning edge-to-edge image quality and a large f/1.4 maximum aperture. They offer stunning visuals, ease of use, dependability, and high performance for both video and still production, perfect for professional photographers and videographers, photojournalists, hybrid shooters, and content creators, to meet their needs of professional production and serve as a differentiating factor for content creation.
Superior Image Quality
RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM’s f/1.4 maximum aperture gives a rich bokeh effect and enables a faster shutter speed or lower ISO for low-light conditions. In addition, their 11-blade circular aperture creates a cinematic out-of-focus effect. The 24mm wide-angle focal length of RF24mm F1.4 L VCM provides a field of view wider than what the human eye can capture, and in combination with the beautiful bokeh created by the large f/1.4 aperture, it makes the perspective more prominent and brings the theme vividly to life. While the 50mm focal length of RF50mm F1.4 L VCM naturally mirrors the human eye, delivering true-to-life perspectives. The sense of distance to the subject created by the 50 mm field of view and the clean depiction of light with minimal aberrations produce more lifelike images with a stronger presence.
Both lenses achieve superior image quality with high resolution even shooting at f/1.4 wide open. RF24mm F1.4 L VCM uses a glass-molded (GMo) aspherical lens to reduce sagittal coma flare and improves the image quality around the points when shooting point light sources. 2 ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lenses with low refraction and low dispersion are also placed effectively to correct chromatic aberration[1]. SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating) and ASC (Air Sphere Coating) are applied to effectively reduce lens flare and ghosting common to wide-angle lenses. RF50mm F1.4 L VCM employs one glass-molded (GMo) aspherical lens and one replica aspheric lens to suppress spherical aberration and image distortion. It uses one single UD lens element to correct chromatic aberration and achieve vivid rendering capabilities with little color blurring. Air Sphere Coating (ASC) is also incorporated to suppress ghosting and reduce flare for clear and high-contrast images even when shooting backlit subjects.
RF24mm F1.4 L VCM can provide 0.17x maximum magnification at 0.24m minimum focusing distance while RF50mm F1.4 L VCM features up to 0.15x maximum magnification and a minimum focusing distance of just 0.4m. They capture sharp, detailed images from edge to edge, no matter how close you get.
“Electronic Floating Focus Control” With VCM & Nano USM
Both RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM use Electronic Floating Focus Control with a VCM (Voice Coil Motor)[2] as the drive for the “focusing lens group” in combination with a Nano USM as the drive for the “floating lens”. The high-thrust VCM actuates the heavy “focusing lens group”, while the compact, energy-saving Nano USM actuates the lightweight “floating lens”. This mechanism achieves quiet, smooth and precise autofocus for both photos and video, and ensures high image quality from close-ups to infinity. The “Electronic floating Focus Control” also thoroughly suppresses focus breathing in all focus positions optically, Focus Breathing Correction[3] is also supported to further reduce focus breathing during movie shooting.
Intuitively Designed
RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM adopt the same high mobility design of RF35mm F1.4 L VCM with a length of approx. 99.3mm, and weight approx. 515g and 580g respectively. They also feature an iris ring[4] for manual aperture control during video shooting, which supports 1/32-stop aperture adjustment during movie shooting[5]. The iris ring enables smooth aperture control without any clicks, making the lenses more comfortable to use even during location shootings.
Both RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM supports the same 67mm screw-in filter as RF35mm F1.4 L VCM. The RF24mm F1.4 L VCM s also comes with a rear filter holder that can be used to attach a gelatin filter behind the lens. Both RF24mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM feature a high level of durability and shock resistance with dust-and-water-resistant[6], along with a fluorine coating on the foremost lens surface to reduce the attachment of dust, oil, and water droplets. They also feature one customizable Lens Function (L-Fn) button, providing quick access to essential functions such as autofocus, exposure, connectivity, and more, allows the users to effortlessly adapt to changing scenes to capture the perfect shot.

[1] Multiple exposure shooting is not supported on EOS R5/R6/R/Ra/RP, it is also not possible to shoot multiple exposures with another lens using images shot with this lens. The lens distortion correction on the camera is set to [Enable] automatically when in use.
[2] This lens emits weak magnetism, if users with implanted cardiac pacemakers or other medical device experience any abnormalities, stop using the product immediately and consult a doctor. When the lens is not attached to the camera or the power switch of the camera is in the off status when the lens is attached, shaking the lens may cause the internal lens group to shift and noise may occur, but this is not a malfunction. Although the internal lens group shifts due to vibration such as when the lens is carried, this will not affect aspects such as performance.
[3] Available on EOS R1 / EOS R5 Mark II / EOS R6 Mark II / EOS R8 / EOS R50. As of 30th October 2024.
[4] The iris ring can be used to set the aperture value when shooting still images with EOS R5 Mark II or later EOS camera only. During movie shooting, when using the iris ring operation, focusing on a subject by autofocus may be difficult.
[5] Depends on camera setting, aperture value is displayed in 1/2-stop or 1/3-stop. The aperture value displayed on the camera may differ from the actual aperture value.
[6] With Dust-and-water-resistant EOS R series camera; however, it is not recommended for use under rain.
