Canon officially launches RF20mm F1.4 L VCM
An ultra-fast f/1.4 ultra-wide-angle RF lens designed for hybrid shooting

HONGKONG, 25th April 2025 — Canon officially launches the new compact ultra-fast f/1.4 ultra-wide RF lens designed for Hybrid Shooting, RF20mm F1.4 L VCM. The new lens will be an integral part of the hybrid shooters’ toolkit in addition to the previously released RF24mm F1.4 L VCM, RF35mm F1.4 L VCM and RF50mm F1.4 L VCM. The new compact hybrid lens is designed to work seamlessly and interchangeably with the other lenses in the f/1.4 ultra-fast hybrid RF lens series. Likewise, the new RF20mm F1.4 L VCM balances lightweight, compact body with stunning edge-to-edge image quality and a large f/1.4 maximum aperture. The new lens offers stunning visuals, ease of use, dependability, and high performance for both video and still production, perfect for professional photographers and videographers, photojournalists, hybrid shooters, and content creators, to meet their needs of professional production and serve as a differentiating factor for content creation.
Superior Image Quality
RF20mm F1.4 L VCM’s f/1.4 maximum aperture gives a rich bokeh effect and enables a faster shutter speed or lower ISO for low-light conditions. In addition, the 11-blade circular aperture creates a cinematic out-of-focus effect. The 20mm ultra-wide focal length of RF20mm F1.4 L VCM provides a field of view wider than what the human eye can capture, and in combination with the beautiful bokeh created by the large f/1.4 aperture, it makes the perspective more prominent and brings the subject vividly to life. RF20mm F1.4 L VCM provides 0.19x maximum magnification at 0.20m minimum focusing distance, capturing sharp, detailed images from edge to edge, no matter how close you get.
RF20mm F1.4 L VCM achieves superior image quality with high resolution even shooting in low-light conditions. Being the first lens in the f/1.4 ultra-fast hybrid RF lens series to features BR optical element (Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics), which has anomalous dispersion characteristics that greatly refract blue light (short wavelengths), RF20mm F1.4 L VCM, together with a Super UD lens and two UD lenses, expertly controls chromatic aberration for exceptional image clarity even shooting at f/1.4 wide open. The new lens uses two glass-molded (GMo) aspherical lenses[1]. to reduce sagittal coma flare and improve the image quality around the points when shooting point light sources. SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating) and ASC (Air Sphere Coating) are applied to effectively reduce lens flare and ghosting common to wide-angle lenses.
High Thrust Voice Coil Motor (VCM)
RF20mm F1.4 L VCM features a Voice Coil Motor (VCM)[2] to convert electrical energy into fluid, controlled motion. The high-thrust VCM is capable of handling heavy focus lens group at high speed and with precision. This allows the RF20mm f/1.4L VCM to deliver smooth, accurate, and near-silent autofocus that lets you capture every cinematic moment with confidence and ease. RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is also capable of suppressing breathing optically in all focus positions, while Focus Breathing Correction[3] is also supported to further reduce focus breathing during movie shooting, resulting in outstanding video quality.
Intuitively Designed
RF20mm F1.4 L VCM adopts the same high mobility design of the f/1.4 ultra-fast hybrid RF lens series with a length of approx. 99.3mm, and weight approx. 519g. The new lens also features an iris ring[4] for manual aperture control during video shooting, which supports 1/32-stop aperture adjustment during movie shooting[5]. The iris ring enables smooth aperture control without any clicks, making the lens more comfortable to use even during location shootings.
RF20mm F1.4 L VCM supports the same 67mm screw-in filter as RF35mm F1.4 L VCM. It also comes with a rear filter holder that can be used to attach a gelatin filter behind the lens. The new lens features a high level of durability and shock resistance with dust-and-water-resistant[6], along with a fluorine coating on the foremost lens surface to reduce the attachment of dust, oil, and water droplets. RF20mm F1.4 L VCM also features one customizable Lens Function (L-Fn) button, providing quick access to essential functions such as autofocus, exposure, connectivity, and more, allowing users to effortlessly adapt to changing scenes to capture the perfect shot.

[1] Multiple exposure shooting is not supported on EOS R5/R6/R/Ra/RP, it is also not possible to shoot multiple exposures with another lens using images shot with this lens. The lens distortion correction on the camera is set to [Enable] automatically when in use.
[2] This lens emits weak magnetism, if users with implanted cardiac pacemakers or other medical device experience any abnormalities, stop using the product immediately and consult a doctor. When the lens is not attached to the camera or the power switch of the camera is in the off status when the lens is attached, shaking the lens may cause the internal lens group to shift and noise may occur, but this is not a malfunction. Although the internal lens group shifts due to vibration such as when the lens is carried, this will not affect aspects such as performance.
[3] Available on EOS R1 / EOS R5 Mark II / EOS R6 Mark II / EOS R8 / EOS R50 V / EOS R50. As of 27th March 2025.
[4] The iris ring can be used to set the aperture value when shooting still images with EOS R5 Mark II or later EOS camera only. During movie shooting, when using the iris ring operation, focusing on a subject by autofocus may be difficult.
[5] Depends on camera setting, aperture value is displayed in 1/2-stop or 1/3-stop. The aperture value displayed on the camera may differ from the actual aperture value.
[6] With Dust-and-water-resistant EOS R series camera; however, it is not recommended for use under rain.
