HONG KONG, 20th February 2025 — Canon today officially launches the new compact and lightweight fast F2.8 constant aperture ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM. It is Canon’s second F2.8 constant aperture non-L RF Zoom lens after the popular RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM. The new RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM provides photo amateurs, hybrid shooters and content creators with a high-performance ultra-wide-angle zoom option that is affordable, provides premium image quality and versatility of a bright, constant F2.8 aperture.
Versatile Ultra-Wide Angle Zoom Lens
Ultra-wide angle zoom lenses are an extremely popular next lens to get and especially so for photo amateurs and creators due to their wider coverage, dynamic perspective, and framing flexibility. The RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM will be the first non-L RF zoom lens to supercharge these features with a bright, constant F2.8 aperture. Previously only available on prime lenses or professional-grade L Zoom lenses, it is now possible for photo amateurs and creators who are on a tight budget to create beautiful bokeh or shoot in low light with increased control over exposure settings, regardless if they are creating dramatic compositions at 16mm or more natural-looking context-filled portraits at 28mm.
Outsanding Image Quality
RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is a high-performance ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, its newly developed 16 elements in 13 groups optical design takes full advantage of the large diameter mount and short back focus of RF Mount and features 1 Replica Aspherical Lens, 1 Glass-Molded (GMo) Aspherical lens and 4 Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lenses. Improvements in the manufacturing process have enabled the use of 1 Replica Aspherical Lens with largest-diameter of any RF Lens for the front lens in RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM. This replica aspherical lens also contributes to better image quality through surface precision superior to that of EF lenses. The use of 4 UD lenses corrects chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and achieve vivid rendering capabilities with little color blurring. The lens captures every detail with precision, ensuring that each image is sharp from corner to corner even at wide open, achieving premium image quality equivalent to L Lenses. Its high image quality and the versatility of a bright, constant f/2.8 aperture is perfect for travel and landscape photography as well as vlogging.
RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM’s built-in Optical Image Stabilizer offers up to 5.5-stop[1] shake compensation at center, when paired with EOS R-series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilization, up to 8.0-stop shake compensation at center and 7.5-stop in peripheral[2] can be achieved through Coordinated Control IS. RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM also features Peripheral Coordinated Control[3] to reduce peripheral blurs for wide angle photo due to small camera shakes. The RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is capable of focusing at a distance as near as 20cm at 28mm focal length and offers up to 0.26x magnification, allowing you to get closer to your subject for detailed close-up shots.
Accurate and Seamless Autofocusing
In addition to Leadscrew type STM and inner focusing system, RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM also features a smaller and lighter focus group to provide swift, precise and accurate AF during stills and excellent control required for smooth, quiet focus transitions when shooting videos. It also supports focus breathing correction[4] when used with compatible cameras, where the camera digitally corrects fluctuations in the angle of view caused by focus movement during video shooting.
Intuitively Designed
RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM has been designed with a size and weight almost the same as the RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM in the f/2.8 constant aperture zoom lens series. Although it is an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens with a constant f/2.8 aperture and optical image stabilizer, the use of retractable lens design and taking the advantage of in-camera distortion correction[5] help reducing its size and the weight. It weighs only 445g and 91.0mm long when retracted, achieving compact and lightweight portability.RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is built with the same dust-and water-resistance as L-series lenses, making it ideal for challenging conditions. The control ring and mount joints are sealed to protect the lens from sudden rain or moisture, especially when shooting near water.
