Dual Pixel Intelligent AF for Advanced Subject Detection and Tracking
EOS R5 Mark II is equipped with the Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system, which leverages the Accelerated Capture system and deep learning technology, bringing revolutionary AF tracking performance. The new Action Priority [1], which identifies specific actions (e.g., shooting) unique to soccer, basketball and volleyball and moves the AF point to the main player, readily capture decisive scenes with high-speed detection of players’ joint and ball position, ensuring the capture of splendid moments. The evolved AF Tracking algorithm enables persistent AF tracking even when similar subjects cross each other using face recognition, new upper half body detection and avoiding obstacles by estimating head area.
Professionals shooting events and concerts will benefit from the Register People Priority function, users can preregister up to 10 characters in the camera, when there are multiple people in the AF area / point, it prioritizes the preregistered person[2] for subject detection.

Eye Control AF provides smooth AF control and operation
EOS R5 Mark II incorporates an upgraded Eye Control AF[3], when a photographer is looking in the view finder, AF frame can be controlled based on the detection of eye movement and the photographer's gaze, making quick AF transition between subjects possible. EOS R5 Mark II’s eye control sensor has a higher pixel count and improved placement with a greater number of light source LEDs. Eye detection area is now larger, improving detection stability when eye alignment is off or glasses are worn.Detection algorithm improvements have doubled the line-of-sight detection frame rate. This enables more stable detection and faster tracking of eye movement.

Other advanced auto focus features include:

    • Renowned “Dual Pixel CMOS AF” technology provides up to 100% AF coverage area[4]
    • AF tracking and calculation at 60 fps when an electronic shutter is used. The high-precision AF continues capturing the subject even during continuous shooting at speeds of up to approx. 30FPS.Impressive low-light focusing capabilities down to EV-6.5[5].
    • AF algorithm developed using Deep Learning technology for high performance Subject Recognition and AF tracking of People, Animals (Dogs, cats, birds and horses)[6] and Vehicles (motorsports (automobiles and motorcycles), trains and airplanes)[7]
    • AF frame or Tracking subject can be switched even during AF or continuous shooting. Whole Area Tracking can be turned on or off during AF or continuous shooting too.
    • Focus Preset function previously only available on super-telephoto lenses can now be assigned to camera buttons or Lens Function (L.Fn) button[8]
    • 4 AF Areas with Whole Area Tracking OFF have been added.

    In-Camera Image Enhancements
The EOS R5 Mark II improves workflow efficiency and image quality through in-camera Neural network Noise Reduction and In-camera Upscaling that use deep learning technology.

EOS R5 Mark II’s Neural network Noise Reduction reduces the noise during in-camera RAW conversion to HEIF/JPEG by using deep learning to reduce noise. Users can get clear images even in low light or with faster shutter speeds without having to worry about noise. With the EOS R5 Mark II's In-camera Upscaling feature, user can effortlessly transform your 45-megapixel JPEG or HEIF files[9] into stunning 179-megapixel images. The upscaled image produces more details, which means you can crop closer and capture incredible detail. Combine both features to generate cleaner, high-quality extreme crops that retain stunning clarity and detail, further empowering users to unleash their creativity.

High Speed, High Resolution and High Image Quality
The EOS R5 Mark II features Canon's newly developed Full Frame Back-illuminated Stacked CMOS Sensor with a high resolution of 45.0 megapixels and a standard ISO range of ISO 100 to 51,200, which can be extended to ISO 102,400, for clean and low-noise images in low-light environments. The back-illuminated stacked sensor places the wiring behind the photodiode. Its stacked structure separates the data processing area from the pixel area and optimizes them for faster readout speeds. The electronic shutter of EOS R5 Mark II now supports shutter speed of 1/32000s to 30s and bulb exposure. The high-speed readout of CMOS sensor reduces rolling shutter distortion in still photo to about 40% of EOS R5 and also enables 14-bit RAW with electronic shutter for higher image quality.

Taking the advantage of back-illuminated stacked CMOS and Accelerated Capture system, EOS R5 Mark II supports high speed continuous shooting up to approx. 30FPS[10] with AF / AE using Electronic Shutter[11]. Blackout-Free display[12] is also available during continuous shooting. Flash photography is now supported with the electronic shutter, continuous flash photography is enabled at up to approx. 20 shots/sec.[13], the flash sync. speed is up to 1/200s[14] with Sync speed priority.

EOS R5 Mark II’s new Pre-continuous shooting function[15] lets users capture continuous still photos from the previous 15 frames immediately before fully-pressing the shutter button. Users can choose from RAW / C-RAW / JPEG / HEIF recording and supports AF / AE tracking. It provides pace of mind with less risk of failed shots when shooting difficult subjects that photographers in the past had to use their intuition to capture.

EOS R5 Mark II features improved 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization which provides up to 8.5-stop shake compensation at center and 7.5-stop shake compensation at peripheral[16]. Peripherical coordinated control is also supported with compatible lenses. The more precise blur correction calculation by the DIGIC accelerator and improved algorithm provide better control of Yaw / Pitch / Roll direction blurring over the EOS R3. The small shakes that can occur even when the shutter speed is fast (near the 1 / focal length) have also been suppressed. The newly designed IS mechanism also doubles the range of blur control in the rolling direction over the EOS R3.

    Other high image quality features:

    • More precise metering with 6144 metering zones and a new algorithm that expands the range of deep learning applications to improve auto exposure and auto white balance precision in all kinds of scenes.
    • New Blur/Out-of-Focus image detection that automatically scores images for levels of blur and out-of-focus based on face positions of the subject and adds results to images.[17]

New EOS Movie features to enhance efficiency
EOS R5 Mark II comes with new advancements on video shooting, features originated from Cinema EOS system are included for professional filmmaking and video production needs. EOS R5 Mark II Incorporates Custom Picture (CP) colour preset of Cinema EOS, allowing users to select the best gamma and colour space for their intended use, even when shooting straight out of camera (SOOC) without editing. EOS R5 Mark II is the first EOS system camera to offer Canon Log 2 with 16+ stop dynamic range[18], which provides more vivid colour reproduction, expanding the possibilities of post-production to meet photographers’ boundless artistic visions. To streamline the workflow with Cinema EOS, it adapts the XF-AVC S / XF-HEVC S file system from Cinema EOS system.

EOS R5 Mark II newly supports internal recording of non-cropped 8K DCI 60p 12-bit Light RAW Movie and the newly introduced SRAW format, which retains all the depth and detail of 12 - bit RAW in about half the file size, providing users with more freedom for colour grading during post-processing.
