Canon unveils 2 Futuristic Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras with AI Technologies
EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II
HONGKONG, 17th July 2024 – Canon today announced 2 new futuristic full-frame mirrorless cameras with groundbreaking AI technologies, the EOS R1 – Canon’s flagship EOS R system camera, it is made for photojournalists and professionals in the field of sport, events and wildlife photography; and the EOS R5 Mark II – high-speed 8K hybrid full frame EOS R mirrorless camera, it is made for professional photographers, advanced photo amateurs and content creators. Both EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II have evolved with new technologies and innovative features, leading users to a powerful, reliable and rapid new photography era.
With the new Accelerated Capture system, the most powerful image processor system in EOS History, combining the newly developed stacked CMOS Sensor and, new DIGIC Accelerator alongside the renowned and DIGIC X image processor to provide a unprecedent processing speed, improved image quality and AF precision. Accelerated Capture technology can process large volumes of data from the sensor at high speeds with processing and analysis technologies based on deep learning for AE / AF detection by DIGIC Accelerator to provide various advancements including improved image quality, speed, and AF precision.
Both EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II are equipped with the next-generation Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system, which leverages the Accelerated Capture system and deep learning technologies, bringing revolutionary AF tracking performance. One new AF feature is the Action Priority AF mode[1], which identifies specific actions (e.g., shooting) unique to soccer, basketball and volleyball and moves the AF point to the main player, readily capturing decisive scenes with high-speed detection of players’ joint and ball position, ensuring the capture of splendid moments. Besides, evolved AF Tracking algorithm also greatly improves the function of persistent subject tracking, even when similar subjects cross each other using face recognition, new upper half body detection and avoiding obstacles by estimating head area. Professionals shooting events and concerts will benefit from the Register People Priority function, users can preregister up to 10 characters in the camera, when there are multiple people in the AF area / point, it prioritises the preregistered person[2] for subject detection.
The new cameras are designed for seamless control and operation, enabling better responsiveness to dynamic situations. Both EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II incorporate upgraded Eye Control AF[3], when a photographer is looking in the view finder, it can control the AF frame based on the detection of eye movement and the photographer's gaze, making quick AF transition between subjects possible. Eye detection is now improved to enable more stable detection and faster tracking of eye movement.
Also, with the new In-Camera Upscaling function which uses deep learning algorithms, photographers can do in-cam cropping directly after shooting and increases the number of pixels by 4 times from JPEG / HEIF images[4] after shooting while maintaining apparent resolution. This simplified flow will help photographers achieve high-quality extreme crops on the spot without using other devices.
Other Common Features about Deep Learning of EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II include:
- More precise metering with 6144 metering zones and a new algorithm that expands the range of deep learning applications to improve auto exposure and auto white balance precision in all kinds of scenes.
- New In-camera Neural Network Noise Reduction applies deep learning to generate images with reduced noise when processing RAW images.
- New Blur / Out-of-Focus image detection[5] that automatically scores images for levels of blur and out-of-focus based on face positions of the subject and adds results to EXIF.
Both EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II also come with new advancements on video shooting, adding Custom Picture (CP) colour preset originated from Cinema EOS system, allowing users to select the best gamma and color space for their intended use, even when shooting straight out of camera (SOOC) without editing. They are also the first EOS system cameras to offer Canon Log 2 with 16+ stop dynamic range[6], which provides more vivid colour reproduction, expanding the possibilities of post-production to meet photographers’ boundless artistic visions. To streamline the workflow with Cinema EOS, both cameras adapt the XF-AVC S / XF-HEVC S file system from Cinema EOS system.
