HONG KONG, 28th November 2024 — Canon today officially launched the professional hybrid telephoto zoom L lens RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z. It is an indispensable part of the equipment for hybrid shooters and video creators. This new lens stands out as a telephoto zoom with iris control for precise creative expression. Featuring a wide f/2.8 aperture and an 11-blade circular design, it produces beautifully cinematic bokeh that elevates your filmmaking. RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z will empower professional photographers and videographers, hybrid shooters and content creators to produce cinematic-quality videos, best for recording the crucial moments at weddings, events or sports games.

Classic Telephoto Zoom Lens Upgraded for Hybrid Shooting

The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z is the second professional hybrid zoom lens after the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z that supports advanced, smooth motor-powered zoom control via the Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B (sold separately). It supplements the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, with the popular 70-200mm zoom range, combining with constant fast f/2.8 aperture, it can capture high-quality photos and videos of scenes or subjects that are further away such as sports, news and events.

The RF70-200MM F2.8 L IS USM Z’s fixed-length barrel and internal focusing design minimize the change in the center of gravity during zooming, making it easier to use with accessories like a gimbal. With two Nano USMs in an “Electronic Floating Focus Control” system, two focus lens groups are individually driven, delivering quick, precise, and near-silent AF, ideal for video recording. It also offers Focus Breathing Correction[1] during movie shooting and electronic parfocal focus stability while zooming. These features allow RF70-200MM F2.8 L IS USM Z to focus very quickly and silently while delivering high image quality. It also features an Iris Ring[2] for controlling the aperture physically on the lens, which supports 1/32-stop aperture adjustment during movie shooting[3]. Like a cinema lens, the user can enjoy light, smooth torque and intuitive control over aperture and exposure adjustment.

    Versatile & Agile

RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z has a versatile focal length, which allows users to easily switch between medium telephoto and super telephoto perspective. It can be used with extenders, which increase the lens’ zoom range up to 280mm at f/4 with Extender RF 1.4x, and up to 400mm f/5.6 with Extender RF 2x. Concurrently, it is also capable of close-ups of small objects at its 200mm end, it has the closest focusing distance of 0.68m and a maximum magnification of 0.3x.

For handheld shooting, the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z's built-in Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 5.5 stops[4] of image stabilization at center. When paired with EOS R-series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilization, up to 7.5-stop shake compensation at center and 7.0-stop in peripheral[5] can be achieved through Coordinated Control IS. The RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z has 3 selectable IS modes, allowing users to select the suitable mode for responding to different shooting objects.

    Comfortable Operability and Intuitively Designs

The RF70-200MM F2.8 L IS USM Z comes in two colour variations, a heat-reflective white to prevent heat buildup during outdoor shoots and ensure the exterior remains comfortable to handle even under prolonged exposure to sunlight. The standard inconspicuous black blends seamlessly with other video equipment, reduces reflections entering the image and provides a sleek, professional aesthetic in any production environment. It weighs only approx. 1,110g for Black version[6] and approx. 1,115g for White version[6]. Its tripod mount can be easily attached and detached without tools to accommodate different setups and shooting styles. As the exterior interface and physical measurements of the RF70-200MM F2.8 L IS USM Z are identical to the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, users can switch seamlessly between these two lenses. This is useful for situations such as video production where users will not be required to adjust their shooting setup if the lenses are swapped.

Moreover, RF70-200MM F2.8 L IS USM Z also incorporates two customizable Lens Function buttons on the body of the lens allow users to instantly access various functions related to AF, exposure, connectivity, and more. The lens has high level of durability with dust-and-water-resistant design[7] to meet professional requirement. It also features fluorine coating on foremost lens surface to prevent dust, oil and water from sticking to the lens.
