Canon Hong Kong Participated in Chinese White Dolphin Watch
and Beach Cleaning Service
Lying at the South China Sea environ and the eastern edge of the Pearl River estuary, the western waters of Hong Kong is home to many wildlife habitats, including the Chinese White Dolphins. These endangered species play a significant role in balancing the water eco-system and serve as a key indicator for assessing the general health of Hong Kong marine ecology. However, they are facing habitat loss and disturbance due to human activities, coastal development and marine pollutions. To safeguard the local biodiversity, Canon Hongkong Company Limited (Canon Hong Kong) organized the Chinese White Dolphin Watch and Beach Cleaning Tour jointly with the Eco Association on 21 September.
Being the biggest volunteer activity of the year, a total of 57 volunteers from the Corporate Volunteer Team joined the tour, including members from Canon Hong Kong, Canon Engineering Hong Kong Co., Ltd. (CEHK) and Canon Electronic Business Machines (H.K.) Co., Ltd. (CEBM). Led by Mr. Kazuhiro Ozawa, President and CEO of Canon Hong Kong and Mr. Katsumi Ishizawa, Managing Director of CEHK, the volunteer team seized a valuable Chinese White Dolphin sight-seeing cruise journey to Lantau in the morning and headed to Lung Kwu Chau for beach cleaning in the afternoon.
We were honored to invite Mr. Thomas Tue to lead the tour, who is the founder of Eco Association and a professional eco guide, also known as Mr. Dolphin. The cruise set sail in Tung Chung and the volunteers spent precious hours at sea observing the breathtaking spectacle of Chinese White Dolphins. During the journey, Thomas shared vast fun facts and characteristics of the lovely creatures as well as ecological conservation knowledge which allowed the participants to help conserve the living environment.
The team then went to Lung Kwu Chau, one of Hong Kong’s worst marine litter black spots, to carry out the beach cleaning activity. All volunteers delivered strong team spirit and a total of 39 bags of plastic bottles were collected. By removing trash from the coastlines, we can prevent litter from entering the seas and destroying the marine ecosystem and contribute to restoring the coastal scenery.
Throughout the dolphin watch tour and beach cleaning activity, the volunteers get to strengthen the awareness of current marine problems such as the accumulation of marine debris and learnt how to tackle with practical actions. In line with our corporate philosophy “Kyosei”, Canon Hong Kong remains committed to contribute to the well-being of mankind and wildlife by supporting environmental and ecological preservation activities.
