— HONG KONG, 23rd January 2025— Canon today announced the launch of a new compact and lightweight fast F2.8 constant aperture ultra-wide-angle zoom lens, RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM. It is Canon’s second F2.8 constant aperture non-L RF Zoom lens after the popular RF28-70mm F2.8 IS USM. The design concept of RF16-28mm F2.8 IS USM emphasizes a balance of size, image quality, functionality, and price, bringing a more affordable F2.8 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens option to photo amateurs, hybrid shooters and content creators.
Designed to be compact and lightweight, the RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is around 91.0mm long when fully retracted, and weighs about 445g, which is similar to the RF28-70mm F2.8 IS STM. RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM is a high-performance ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that features a Replica Aspherical lens of the largest-diameter of any RF lens, 1 Glass-Molded (GMo) Aspherical lens and 4 UD lenses, providing premium image quality and versatility of a bright, constant f/2.8 aperture for travel and landscape photography as well as vlogging.
RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM – Compact and lightweight F2.8 Ultra-wide-angle Zoom Lens
Made for: Photo Amateurs, Hybrid Shooter, Content Creator
Best for: Travel, landscape and vlogging
Features:
A compact and lightweight F2.8 Ultra-wide-angle Zoom lens which weighs 445g and 91.0mm long when retracted[1].
Use of 4 UD lenses to correct chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and achieves vivid rendering capabilities with little color blurring.
Effective placement of 1 Replica Aspherical lens and 1 Glass-Molded (GMo) Aspherical lens to compensate spherical aberrations and distortion and enable more compact size.
Improvements in the manufacturing process have enabled the first-time use of the largest-diameter Replica Aspherical lens of any RF lens for the front lens element, delivering high-level image quality approaching that of L Lenses.
9-blade circular aperture delivers beautiful and soft background blur.
Optical Image Stabilizer offers up to 5.5-stop[2] shake compensation at center, when paired with EOS R-series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilization, up to 8.0-stop shake compensation at center and 7.5-stop in peripheral[3] can be achieved through Coordinated Control IS.
Features Peripheral Coordinated Control[4] to reduce peripheral blurs for wide angle photo due to small camera shakes.
0.26x maximum magnification at 0.2m minimum focusing distance (at 28mm).
Equipped with Leadscrew type STM to provide high-speed AF and smooth Movie AF.
Compatible with Focus Breathing Correction[5] during movie shooting.
“Focus mode / Control Selector” switch design enables swift switching of “Focus/Control Ring” for manual focusing or Control Ring operation such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed or exposure compensation adjustment.
Renowned Super Spectra Coating and optimized shapes of lens elements help to improve anti-ghosting and flare performance.
Optional Lens Hood EW-73E further enhances flare resistance.
Dust-and-water-resistant design[6] equivalent to that of L-series lenes.
Estimated Suggested Retail Price: HK$8,880
Estimated Sales Start Date: February 2025
[1] Multiple exposure shooting is not supported on EOS R5 / EOS R6 / EOS R / EOS Ra / EOS RP, it is also not possible to shoot multiple exposures with another lens using images shot with this lens. The lens distortion correction on the camera is set to [Enable] automatically when in use.
[2] CIPA 2024 Standard, Focal Length: 28mm, EOS R8 is used. In yaw/pitch direction.
[3] CIPA 2024 Standard, Focal Length: 28mm, EOS R1 is used. In yaw/pitch/roll direction.
[4] Peripheral Coordinated Control is automatically activated when combined with a compatible camera (EOS R1 / EOS R5 Mark II / EOS R6 Mark II firmware ver.1.5.0 or later. As of January 2025). Applies to still photography only.
[5] Available on EOS R1 / EOS R5 Mark II / EOS R6 Mark II / EOS R8 / EOS R50. As of January 2025.
