Canon Hong Kong Participated in Yi O Shoreline Cleanup Volunteer Service and Rice Transplanting Experience
Located on the southwest coast of Lantau Island, Yi O has a history spanning over 300 years. Composed of a tapestry of farmland, streams, forests, and mudflats, it boasts rich water resources and biodiversity, providing habitats for butterflies and amphibians. However, in recent years, Yi O has been severely impacted by coastal litter, with non-native waste continuously washing ashore and threatening its ecosystem. To safeguard Hong Kong’s natural environment, Canon Hongkong Company Limited (Canon Hong Kong) once again partnered with Greeners Action to organize the “Yi O Shoreline Cleanup Volunteer Service and Rice Transplanting Experience” on 28 March.
On the event day, led by Mr. Gary Lee, President and CEO of Canon Hong Kong, a corporate volunteer team of 36 colleagues from Canon Hong Kong, Canon Engineering Hong Kong Co., Ltd. and Canon Electronic Business Machines (H.K.) Co., Ltd. took sampans from Tai O to Yi O Beach to carry out the cleanup in the morning. The volunteers worked together to successfully collect 55kg of trash and conducted a waste audit to analyze litter types and quantities, gaining deeper insights into the waste sources. They later visited the Yi O Village, learning about the area’s unique ecosystem through an eco-tour guide’s introduction and appreciating the beauty of its mangrove wetlands and surrounding scenery.
After a farm-to-table lunch, the volunteers entered the rice fields to experience rice transplanting firsthand, carefully planting seedlings into the wet fields to appreciate traditional farming practices and the hard work of farmers. This activity not only enabled participants to take action to protect the coastal environment and raise awareness of coastal pollution and conservation, but also deepened their understanding of local agriculture, ecological conservation, and sustainable land use, thereby contributing to community sustainability.
Upholding the corporate philosophy of "Kyosei", Canon Hong Kong will continue to actively engage in various green initiatives and volunteer services, uniting efforts to protect the natural environment and working alongside the community to build a better, more sustainable future.
