Canon Officially Launches the New Wide Angle Pancake RF Lens RF28mm F2.8 STM

    RF28mm F2.8 STM

HONG KONG, 13 July 2023 — Canon today announces the official launch of RF28mm F2.8 STM, the first pancake lens developed for RF Mount, considered as the smallest, thinnest, and lightest RF lens[1] with a length of 24.7mm when it is retracted and weight of 120g only. The lens’ 8 elements in 6 groups optical design features 3 large-diameter PMo aspherical lenses for high image quality and compactness while keeping the number of elements to a minimum[2]. The versatile focal length on both full-frame and APS-C EOS R cameras also makes it an appealing choice of focal length for users of both systems. RF28mm F2.8 STM would be an ideal choice for landscapes, streets and alleys, architecture, snapshots, or other topics. It is your best partner to explore the bustling city and record daily life.

Stunning Image Quality With Compact Lens Design

RF28mm F2.8 STM is the smallest, thinnest and lightest RF lens[1] with a length of 24.7mm when it is retracted and weight of 120g only. A gear-type Stepping Motor (STM) is equipped to achieve a more compact design and support high speed and smooth AF for still images and video shooting. Also, the lens equipped with “Focus/Control Ring” and adopts an arc-shaped “Focus mode / Control Selector” switch design, with AF/Control/MF Options to provide operability in a compact format and to maintain lens’ compactness. Taking the advantage of RF Mount’s large diameter and short back focus, 3 large-diameter PMo aspherical lenses are placed close to the image plane in RF28mm F2.8 STM‘s 8 elements in 6 groups optical design, contribute to the correction of astigmatism and field curvature, providing both high image quality from the center to the periphery and small size & light weight while keep the number of elements to a minimum[2]. Moreover, by reducing the number of lenses in front of the diaphragm and downsizing the front lens, ghosting is dramatically suppressed.

RF28mm F2.8 STM’s aperture is brighter comparing with kit zoom lens, with a 7-blade circular aperture, allows users to create stunning photos with impressive bokeh, foreground and background can be blurred softly and significantly to make people stand out and shoot photos with a three-dimensional effect.

Versatile Focal Length on Both Full-frame and APS-C camera

RF28mm F2.8 STM functions as a 28mm wide-angle lens on full frame EOS R camera, providing a sufficiently wide angle-of-view of the scene, from landscapes and cityscapes to portraits, also benefits for indoor shooting. When attaches to an APS-C EOS R Cameras, the lens can be used as a standard 45mm lens (equivalent to 35mm full-frame format), giving you a natural perspective of a standard lens along with comfortable distance, making it an ideal choice of portraits, snapshots, food and table photo shooting.

    Other Features:

    • 0.17x max. magnification at 0.23m min. focusing distance.
    • Compatible with Focus Breathing Correction[3] during movie shooting.
    • Renowned Super Spectra Coating and optimized shapes of lens elements help to improve anti-ghosting and flare performance.
    • Optional metal Lens Hood EW-55 further enhances flare resistance.
