The EOS R employs the newly developed RF Mount, a fully electronic controlled lens mount with a large 54mm internal diameter, a short flange distance of 20mm and a high capacity, high speed data communication system between camera and lens. This allows for a significantly greater degree of freedom in lens design. Through this advancement, Canon is now able to expand the possibilities of high image quality, advanced specifications and compact design to deliver attractive interchangeable lenses options previously thought unachievable.
With the newly developed 30.3-megapixels Canon Full-frame CMOS image sensor and the latest DIGIC 8 digital image processor, the EOS R achieves a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100–40000 and makes high-image-quality shooting possible. With the evolution of Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the EOS R achieves the world’s fastest autofocus speed of 0.05 seconds[1] and it is the world’s first Full-frame camera offering minimum EV for autofocus at EV-6[2], making possible highly precise focusing even in super low-light scenarios. The camera also achieves an expanded focus area[3] of approximately 100% (vertically) x 88% (horizontally) with maximum 5,655 selectable AF point positions[4] to enable greater composition freedom when shooting.
The EOS R features 4K UHD movie recording with selection of ALL-I or IPB compression. Canon Log is already built-in to deliver up to 12-stop dynamic range and offer a great degree of freedom during post-editing. In addition, the EOS R also supports uncompressed 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 video output to external devices through a HDMI terminal. The new camera features a high quality 0.5-inch 3.69M-dot OLED color electronic viewfinder (EVF), when used in conjunction with the camera’s newly employed control methods such as Multi-Function Bar, Flexible-priority (Fv) exposure mode, users can concentrate on shooting without having to look away from their subject.
Launched together with EOS R is the new RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, a compact and versatile standard zoom lens with Nano USM technology and 5-stop[5]image stabilization. It also features a new “control ring” as found in new RF lens series to which users can adjust assigned camera setting such as ISO sensitivity, shutter speed or aperture value directly from the lens. Furthermore, two new RF mount adapters for the EOS R camera and a Battery Grip BG-E22 are also launched today. The Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R make it possible for any of the more than 70 lenses in Canon’s rich EF and EF-S Lens series line-up to be used with the EOS R camera. The Battery Grip BG-E22 is an optional accessory for use with the EOS R that when attached, offers improved holding when shooting vertically. The grip is also the first for EOS cameras that allows for direct battery charging with the included USB Power adapter PD-E1.
EOS R - Canon’s first Full-frame Mirrorless Digital Interchangeable Lens camera employing new RF Mount
High Image Quality in Compact Form Factor with Newly Developed Full-Frame CMOS Image Sensor, New RF Mount and Latest DIGIC 8 Imagine Processor
Through the combination of RF lenses, a Full-frame CMOS sensor with approximately 30.3-megapixel optimized for RF Lenses and the latest DIGIC 8 image processor, the new Full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R makes high-image-quality shooting possible. The EOS R is equipped with Digital Lens Optimizer (DLO), which corrects for such factors as diffraction and lens aberrations. RF lenses automatically send data necessary for corrections to the camera body to enable corrections without needing to pre-register the lens data on the camera via a PC. Achieving a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100–40000 and expandable to ISO 50-102400, when used in combination with a large aperture lens, the EOS R makes high-image-quality shooting possible even in low-light scenes such as indoors and night time. When using One-shot AF, the camera achieves continuous shooting speeds of approximately 8 fps, and achieves approximately 5 fps with Servo AF. It also adopts the CR3 RAW format and supports the C-RAW (compact RAW) format with file size approx. 40% smaller than standard RAW file. In addition, Dual Pixel RAW shooting is also incorporated to achieve the best RAW image quality by three image post-processing functions including “Image Micro-adjustment”, “Bokeh Shift” and “Ghosting Reduction”. What’s more, it supports 1.6x cropped shooting for both still photo and movie shooting when RF or EF lenses are attached (when EF-S lenses are used, 1.6x cropped shooting will be enabled automatically).
The EOS R employs Dual Sensing IS[6], which detects camera shake with high accuracy to effectively stabilize images. Attaining image information from the image sensor and information from the lens’s gyro sensor, the camera can accurately detect low-frequency vibrations that cannot be detected by the gyro sensor alone to make optimal correction possible. Additionally, through improvements in the shake detection algorithm, the EOS R achieves image stabilization equivalent to a maximum of 5-stop shutter speed for stills shooting (CIPA standard). Moreover, the camera now supports Silent Shooting[7] to bring completely silent and mechanical shake-free shooting, perfect for shooting in concerts or museums. “Anti-Flicker Shooting” is also featured to ensure more consistent exposure and color when shooting under flickering light source such as fluorescent light.
A Breakthrough in Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology
With the evolution in Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF), an autofocus technology in which each effective pixel on the CMOS sensor is able to perform both phase-difference autofocusing and imaging functions, the EOS R achieves the world’s fastest focusing speed of 0.05 seconds [1]. When used in combination with compatible lenses, the camera achieves an expanded focus area of approximately 100% (vertically) x 88% (horizontally)[3]. What’s more, when selecting AF point positions using the directional keypad, users can choose from as many as 5,655 selectable point positions[4], enabling greater composition freedom when shooting.
The EOS R is also the world’s first full-frame camera to offer minimum EV for autofocus at  EV -6[2], making highly precise focusing possible even in super low-light scenarios where distinguishing subjects would be difficult for the human eye. What’s more, the EOS R features Eye AF[8], which can detect and focus on the subject’s eye. The function is ideal for portrait shooting. When shooting with the electronic viewfinder with “Touch and Drag AF” function enabled, you can enjoy an easier and more intuitive focusing experience by dragging the focusing position with your finger on the LCD monitor while confirming the focusing position in the viewfinder in real time.
4K UHD Movie Recording with Canon Log and 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI output
The EOS R makes 4K UHD 29.97p/25p/24.0p/23.98p movie recording possible in H.264 MP4 format with selection of ALL-I (480 Mbps) or IPB (120 Mbps) compression, and also features a 4K frame capture function, which lets users extract selected frames as still images from recorded 4K video[9]. The camera supports Canon Log[10] which has proven results with the Cinema EOS System. Offering up to 12-stop dynamic range for flexible control over shadows and highlights, video captured with Canon Log delivers a great degree of freedom during post-shoot editing and processing and with color grading, rich video expression can be achieved through subtle details of light and shadow. In addition to Full HD 50p/59.94p movie recording[11], EOS R also features HD 100p/119.9p “High Frame Rate” movie[12] for easy creation of impressive slow-motion movies that capture dynamic movement or exciting action at 0.25x speed. 4K and Full HD Time-lapse movie function[13]is also provided, enabling easy capture of stunning day-to-night cityscape time-lapse movies in ultra-high 4K resolution through simple settings. The EOS R supports uncompressed 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 video output to external devices through a HDMI terminal. When using Canon Log, the camera can output video with a rich gradation (10-bit output) and a wide color gamut (next-generation 4K broadcasting standard ITU-R BT.2020).
The EOS R realizes in-body 5-axis electronic image stabilization to enable “Movie Digital IS” for steady handheld movie shooting. What’s more, when used in combination with compatible lenses[14], the camera can make use of Combination IS, which combines electronic stabilization from the camera and optical stabilization from the lens to deliver video with minimal hand shake even when shooting in an unstable position or while walking. In order to facilitate manual focusing, “DAF Focus Guide” function as found in Cinema EOS cameras and “Peaking” function are newly added to assist precise Manual Focus. On the other hand, Dual Pixel CMOS AF also provides “Custom Movie Servo AF” that allows user to customize the Movie Servo AF characteristics. When used with RF lenses, EOS R now supports “Distortion Correction” and 1/8-stop aperture adjustment during movie recording.
Comfortable operation without having to look away from the viewfinder
The EOS R has a built-in high-resolution color electronic viewfinder (EVF) with approximately 100% coverage and 0.76x magnification that employs a 0.5-inch and approximately 3.69M-dot OLED panel. The viewfinder’s optics features a glass-molded aspherical lens to deliver vivid and clear image with minimal aberrations at all angle. It also features a new “Multi-Function Bar” (M.Fn Bar) on its back, an EOS-series first, that enables both tap and slide operations, allowing for easy shooting settings and image browsing. The EVF allows users to confirm the effects of their chosen shooting settings and when combined with such controls as the Multi-Function Bar, Main Dial, Quick Control Dial and the Control Ring on RF lenses. Users can adjust settings instantly while shooting without having to take their eyes off of their subject. A 3.15-inch 2.1M-dot high resolution side-opening Vari-angle Clear View II LCD monitor with touch operation is also featured that allows easy access to menu settings, playback operations and AF control. It also supports the Color Tone adjustment of LCD monitor and electronic viewfinder separately among warm tone, standard and cool tone according to the personal preference and shooting environment. What’s more a 128 x 128 dot-matrix reflective memory LCD top panel is also added to provide essential shooting information.
The EOS R is the first Canon camera to feature a new “Flexible-priority” exposure mode (Fv mode), where such exposure settings as shutter speed, aperture and ISO sensitivity allow for both AUTO and optional direct control in a single mode. With FV mode, users can freely change exposure settings while looking through the electronic viewfinder without having to change exposure modes in the traditional manner via the mode dial or the camera’s LCD screen, allowing them to concentrate on shooting without having to look away from their subject.
