Canon Officially Launches Four New RF Lenses
to Bring Telephoto Capabilities to the Innovative EOS R System

HONG KONG, 30 JULY 2020 — Canon Hongkong announces that four new lenses including RF 600mm f/11 IS STM, RF 800mm f/11 IS STM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x are available for sale from now on. The innovative RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM are the world's lightest 600mm[1] and 800mm[2] autofocus lenses respectively. Incorporating Canon proprietary 3rd generation gapless double-layered Diffractive Optics (DO lens) and optical image stabilizer, these lenses are the affordable choices for photo enthusiasts to experience the joy of super telephoto photography, especially for subjects such as  bird, wildlife, aviation or landscape.

The new Extenders RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x let users of telephoto lenses[3]  swiftly extend the focal length of the master lens by 1.4x or 2x, providing flexibility for capturing subjects at great distance.

RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM
    • Innovative compact super-telephoto lenses with DO lens
    • Best for: birds, wildlife to aviation and landscape photography

By using Diffractive Optics, a fixed f/11 aperture structure and active use of high strength plastic parts, the innovative RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM overturn the traditional impression of super-telephoto lenses by making the lens more compact and affordable. Photo enthusiasts and beginners can now enjoy taking close up of subjects at distance and experiencing the extreme compression of perspective unique to long focal length at an affordable price.    These makes them an ideal choice for a range of image capture – from birds, wildlife to aviation and landscape photography with sun and moon as subject.

    RF 600mm f/11 IS STM

    RF 800mm f/11 IS STM

Both lenses are significantly smaller and lighter compared to existing super-telephoto lenses – just weights 930g (RF 600mm f/11 IS STM) and 1,260g (RF 800mm f/11 IS STM) respectively. By using a retractable barrel structure, the lenses are extended in use and easily retracted to be stored neatly. The length of RF 600mm f/11 IS STM when retracted is just 199.5mm while that of RF 800mm f/11 IS STM when retracted is 281.8mm, ideal for carrying in small kit bag.

Both RF 600mm f/11 IS STM (Lens Construction: 10 elements in 7 groups) and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM (Lens Construction: 11 elements in 8 groups) adopted a Canon proprietary third generation gapless double-layered Diffractive Optics (DO lens), which shares the same structure as the DO element found in the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM, to effectively correct chromatic aberration common in super-telephoto lenses and deliver high image quality. Since DO lens possesses chromatic aberration characteristics opposite to that of conventional glass lenses, chromatic aberration is reciprocally eliminated by combining DO Lens and conventional glass lenses, allowing high chromatic aberration compensation that exceeds that of fluorite lenses and UD lenses. In addition, DO lens also corrects spherical aberrations, by applying a single DO element can thus replace the optical characteristics of multiple lens elements in these 2 lenses, making light and compact high quality super telephoto lens possible.

RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM adopt a fixed aperture of f/11, it provides a perfectly circular bokeh and their long focal length enables photographers to blur the background sufficiently when photographing subjects in the distance. Both lenses features the lead-screw-type Stepping Motor (STM), which delivers fast AF and Smooth Movie Servo AF[4] when paired with any EOS R System mirrorless camera thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Full-time Manual Focus is also supported.  While minimum focusing distance of 4.5m (RF 600mm f/11 IS STM) and 6m (RF 800mm f/11 IS STM) are slightly different, both lenses have the same maximum magnification of 0.14x. RF lens control ring is also incorporated into the lenses to adjust assigned settings such as ISO speed, shutter speed or exposure compensation directly from the lens.

In addition, both lenses are equipped with an optical Image Stabilizer with 5-stop[5] (RF 600mm f/11 IS STM) and 4-stop[6] (RF 800mm f/11 IS STM) shake compensation respectively. This image stabilization feature allows these super-telephoto lenses to deliver pin-sharp images, even when shooting without a tripod or monopod, as image blur caused by long focal length is drastically reduced. The lenses capability to capture the scene from afar with AF[7] and IS capabilities is extended when used with the new Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x. With such extenders, a number of impressive focal lengths can be achieved - the longest being 1600m when the RF 800mm f/11 IS STM is used with the Extender RF 2x.

Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x
    • Uncompromised images that go further

    Extender RF 1.4x

    Extender RF 2x

The new Extender RF 1.4x and RF 2x are useful accessories for RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, RF 600mm f/11 IS STM and RF 800mm f/11 IS STM[8]. Users of these compatible telephoto lenses can extend the focal length of the master lens by 1.4x and 2x swiftly while delivering images of uncompromised quality.

The new extenders achieve both high image quality and a smaller size with an optical design that utilizes the large diameter mount and short back focus of the RF mount. By adopting the latest high-refraction, low-dispersion glass, curvature of field and chromatic aberration of magnification are suppressed for the highest possible image quality. They also feature an optimised lens coating and a three cemented lenses to reduce air contact surface, in order to reduce ghosting.

Further enabling superior optical excellence, the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x boast a proven white heat shield coating to prevent performance deterioration in high temperatures. These extenders also have built-in microprocessors to achieve even higher precision AF[9].  Last but not least, to meet professional requirement, the extenders are built with high level of durability and strength to support heavy lenses and offer dust-and-water-resistance[10]  when used with a compatible L-series RF lens.
