Canon Officially Launches the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM
Expand the RF Lens Line-up’s Capabilities to Super-telephoto Photography

HONG KONG, 27 AUG 2020 — Canon Hongkong announces today that the official launch of RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM, the new high mobility professional super-telephoto zoom lens . This new lens is the RF version of the renowned EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM with the tele-end further extended to 500mm while keeping a similar compact size, thanks to the advantages of the RF mount. While this compact lens is easy to operate, it also generates superior image quality by the use of 1 Super UD lens, 6 UD lenses and ASC (Air Sphere Coating). The lens optical image stabilizer offers up to 5-stop[1] shake compensation to facilitate handheld shooting and deliver exceptionally sharp images even at 500mm focal length; when used with EOS R5 and EOS R6, image stabilization further reaches a maximum of 6-stop[2] . Furthermore, by incorporating Canon’s “Electronic Floating Focus Control” with two Nano USMs to drive two different lens group system individually, the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM does not only achieve an extraordinarily high focus speed, but also an impressive maximum magnification of 0.33x at 500mm focal length, making it the best super-telephoto zoom lens for professional photographers and advanced amateurs capturing wildlife, landscape and sports photography.

A Professional Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens with Outstanding Image Quality

The new RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM features a newly developed 20 elements in 14 groups optical design with effective use of 1 Super UD lens and 6 UD lens elements, axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification are significantly reduced to yield high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. It also incorporates Canon’s ASC (Air Sphere Coating) anti-reflection coating technology to reduce flare and ghosting, and improves image clarity and contrast when shooting into backlight. The RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM adopts a 9-blade circular aperture that allows photographers to create beautiful and soft background blur when photographing subjects in distance.

Crispy-sharp images are also captured even when shooting handheld at long focal lengths or using slower shutter speed as image blur is drastically reduced by the optical image stabilization with 5-stop shake compensation1 and IS Modes 1/2/3. What’s more, the IS effect is further enhanced to 6-stop2 when used with EOS R5 and EOS R6. For those that want to go beyond a 100-500mm focal length range, the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM is compatible with the new Extender RF 1.4x[3] and Extender RF 2x3. When used with these extenders, the focal lengths can be extended to 700mm and 1000mm respectively which gives photographers even more scope and creative freedom.

Canon’s "Electronic Floating Focus Control" for High-speed AF and 0.33x Maximum Magnification

RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is equipped with Canon’s "Electronic Floating Focus Control" with two Nano USMs to drive two individual lens groups and achieve high-speed and high-precision AF for still images as well as smooth Movie Servo AF for videos. The "Electronic Floating Focus Control" also allows the lens design to provide a shorter minimum focus distance to enhance close-up ability. This lens offers a 0.9m and 1.2m minimum focusing distance at its wide-end and tele-end respectively, and a stunning 0.33x maximum magnification can also be achieved at 500mm, allowing users to focus on close-up objects with ease.

A Compact and Mobile Super-telephoto Shooting System for the Full-frame Mirrorless Cameras

Thanks to the advantages of the RF mount design, the size of the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is as compact as the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM with focal length range extended from 100-400mm to 100-500mm. This 5x zoom power super-telephoto is only 207.6mm long with a lighter weight of 1,370 g only that brings user extremely high mobility.

Additional Features of RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM:
    • Incorporates the RF lens control ring to adjust assigned settings such as ISO speed, shutter speed or aperture value directly from the lens
    • Features the proven white heat shield coating to suppress the rise of the lens temperature in hot weather
    • High level of durability and shock resistance with dust-and-water-resistant design [4] to meet professional requirement. Special ventilation route is designed to control air flow as intended during zooming to minimize dust infiltration
    • Fluorine coating on foremost and rearmost lens surfaces helps prevent dust, oil and water from sticking to the lens
