Canon Releases New Firmware for EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III
to Bring Enhanced Movie Recording Capability and Camera Operability
HONG KONG, 30 March 2021 – In response to the needs of users of Canon EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III, Canon Hongkong today announces a new firmware upgrade for the three camera products. The new firmware version 1.3.0 for EOS R5 and EOS R6 coupled with firmware version 1.4.0 for EOS-1D X Mark III are made to enhance the overall product functionality, in particular bringing more powerful movie recording functions and better camera operability.
Newly Added Functions that Perfect EOS R5’s Movie Recording Capability
Firmware version 1.3.0 expands the power of EOS R5 with a number of function enhancements, including the support of Canon Log 3 setting, Full HD 120p/100p high frame rate movie recording, IPB (Light) and 8K RAW (Light) movie formats that result in smaller file size, as well as more comprehensive and personalized camera operations. Details are as follows:
First-Ever Incorporation of “Canon Log 3” Tailored for Cinema EOS Series
Canon Log 3 is a favourite Log setting among Cinema EOS’s users. For the first-time ever, Canon Log 3 previously dedicated only for Cinema EOS cameras is now incorporated in an EOS digital interchangeable-lens camera – EOS R5. Compared to the original “Canon Log” in EOS R5, Canon Log 3 better utilizes the high dynamic range of CMOS image sensor to retain more details and gradation in highlight areas, while the newly added “Cinema Gamut” Colour Space enables greater freedom in color grading. Professional video production crews can now use the Canon Log 3-incorporated EOS R5 along with other Cinema EOS products in production workflow.
Newly-added Full HD Slow Motion Movie that Addresses User’s Needs
With this firmware upgrade, the long-awaited Full HD 120p/100p slow motion movie recording function is added to EOS R5, in addition to its originally featured 4K 120p/100p high frame rate movie recording. This offers users one more option to capture movie in different resolution based on their production needs.
Newly Added 8K RAW (Light) Movie Format
The new RAW (LIGHT) movie format, which is one-third smaller in file size compared with RAW movie, can be selected when taking RAW movie with EOS R5, facilitating easy storage.
Enhanced Operability and More Personalized Options
- Save/ Load Camera Settings on Card: This allows users to save EOS R5’s camera settings to a memory card, and load a saved file and restore the camera to the settings saved to the card. This new feature makes it extremely quick and convenient to apply settings to a back-up EOS R5 body, share settings with others or have your own personalized settings loaded to a camera. Exclusive to the flagship EOS-1D X series in the past, this “Save/ Load Camera Settings on Card” feature brought to EOS R5 with the new firmware upgrade enables users to save up to 10 different “Camera Setting Files” to a card in simple steps and have them loaded back in when needed.
- Monitor Off During Photo Shooting: This feature addresses the worries of battery consumption among some users. When set, the LCD monitor of EOS R5 remains turned off at all times during shooting, while the viewfinder and image playback after shooting can be activated as usual, making it more efficient in energy saving.
In addition to the above newly added functions for EOS R5, the firmware upgrade also brings great enhancements to the operation and capability of the three models respectively.
Newly Added IPB (Light) Movie Format
As far as movie recording is concerned, the firmware upgrade adds IPB (Light) movie format to EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III. IPB (Light) is a recording format with higher compression, resulting in only half the size of a MP4 movie shot in IPB (Standard). Users can choose this format, when small file size for storage comes as the first priority.
Newly Added RAW (Light) Movie Format to EOS-1D X Mark III
The new RAW (LIGHT) movie format can also be selected when taking RAW movie with EOS-1D X Mark III.
Newly Added Electronic Full-time MF for EOS R5 and EOS R6
In response to the needs of professional photographers when it comes to focusing operation, the firmware upgrade adds Full-time Manual Focusing (MF) similar to Ring-type USM lenses to EOS R5 and EOS R6. When used with a compatible lens such as RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, manual focus adjustment through the electronic focusing ring is always possible both in “One-shot AF” and “Servo AF”.
Enhanced FTP Transfer
Besides, EOS R5 offers greater flexibility in FTP transfer with the newly added transfer options [Select Transfer Fail Image (Protected Images only)] and [Select Image Not Transfer (Protected Images only)] to enhance the FTP Transfer with even higher efficiency.
