HONG KONG, 24 December 2018 - Canon announces the new EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM large-aperture super-telephoto lens is now available for sale. In response to the demand of a lighter lens from all super-telephoto lens users, the EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM has been completely redesigned in both optical and mechanical structure to achieve the world’s lightest 600mm f/4 lens[1] which weights only 3,050g, over 20% (870g) weight reduction compared to its predecessor. The EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM features 2 fluorite and 1 Super UD lens elements as well as ASC anti-reflection technology to deliver superb image quality. The optical image stabilizer has also been improved to provide shake compensation up to 5-stop shutter speed[2] with IS Mode 1/2/3 available to facilitate handheld shooting. With the new Electronic Focusing Ring design and newly added “Manual Focus Speed Switch”, the lens now allows photographers to select a desirable manual focusing speed to fine tune the focus position exactly the way they want. EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM is also provides two focus presets to allow photographers to quickly focus on 2 separate pre-determined shooting distances by simply turning the Playback Ring in different directions. To improve the comfortability when using in high temperature, a new heat shield coating with higher reflectivity to infrared rays in sunlight as well as a new two-layered exterior structure that can inhibit heat conductivity are applied to reduce the rise of the lens temperature. Dust-and-water-resistance design and Fluorine coating are also incorporated to withstand the most challenging environment.

Furthermore, a range of new accessories including the bundled new Lens Soft Case LS600 and an optional Lens Short Hood ET-160B are also introduced to enhance the handling and shooting experience. The World’s Lightest 600mm f/4 Lens by Redesigning Optical and Mechanical Structures with Leading Optical Technology
The new EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM has a completely redesigned optical and mechanical structures to significantly reduce 20% of weight (870g) compared to its predecessor and become the World’s Lightest 600mm f/4 lens[1]. The entire optical system was carefully reviewed and redesigned, two fluorite and one Super UD lens elements along with a new glass material are featured to make it possible to place the optical system after the second lens group in the rear for a more lightweight optical design.

Optical design with rear placement of lenses elements

In terms of the mechanical structure, the use of electronic focusing ring, lighter lens barrel material and lightweight IS unit have further reduced the weight of the lens.  The EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM newly incorporates an electronic focusing ring. With the electronic focusing ring, it eliminates the need for mechanically-linked mechanisms to drive the focus group and thus offers the freedom to design a more lightweight structure. The barrel structure has been simplified from a 4-component to a 2-component configuration; thinner lens barrel with the same rigidity as the previous models is possible by aggressively use of carbon reinforced magnesium alloy to further reduce the overall weight. Professionals and advanced photographers now can enjoy this new super-telephoto lens with greatly improved portability, flexibility and expanded photographic opportunities.

Superior Image Quality that can meet the professional needs

As a flagship model in EF Lens system, EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM delivers exceptional image quality to meet demands from professional photographers. The lens adopts a new 17 elements in 13 groups optical design with 2 fluorite and 1 Super UD lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration and achieve high resolution and contrast across the entire frame of the images. The new glass material of the first lens element also effectively suppresses spherical and chromatic aberrations.

EF 600mm f/4 lens is commonly used in motorsports and wildlife photography. The 600mm super-telephoto focal length allows motorsports photographers to deliver strong visual impact of intense racing with the 600mm perspective compression. While for wildlife photographers, the 600mm focal length helps bringing immediacy to shots of wild lives, such as a hunting lion or small animals like birds in forest which are generally difficult to photograph from a close distance, and capture the dramatic moments in nature. In some occasions, small animals may come too close to the photographer, the shortened minimum focusing distance of EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM to 4.2m and 0.15x magnification still can bring them in focus with excellent details.

To minimize flare and ghosting, EF 600mm f/4L IS III features Canon’s ASC (Air Sphere Coating) anti-reflection technology. The combination of new optical design and ASC results in improved flare and ghosting control over its predecessor.   ASC is a combination of the conventional vapor-deposited multi-layer coatings with an ultra-low refractive index outermost layer. The ultra-low refractive index layer is a film consisting of silicon dioxide and a certain percentage of air. The resulting structural refractive index provides an ultra-low refractive index significantly lower than that of the existing vapor-deposited coatings. This can effectively reduce ghosting and flare that cannot be prevented with conventional vapor-deposited multi-layer coatings. ASC has excellent anti-reflective effects particularly with respect to incident light that enters vertically. The result is a significant suppression of flare and ghosting in backlit environment at a level not possible with ordinary coating. It helps to provide cleaner photographs with fewer distracting reflective effects in the image.

The f/4 Large Aperture and 5-Stop[2] Optical Image Stabilization
The EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM features a bright constant aperture of f/4 which enables the photographers to possess the flexibility in setting the shutter speed or ISO sensitivity especially when light is limited. It also emphasizes pin-sharp subjects against a silky smooth, out-of-focus background together with the lens 9-blade circular aperture.

In addition to large aperture, Image stabilization (IS) also plays a crucial part in super telephoto photography. The EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM features an optical image stabilizer system that provides shake compensation for up to 5-stop shutter speed[2]. With the significant weight reduction, more comfortable handheld shooting facilitated by the Image Stabilizer becomes possible with this 600mm lens.

[IS ON] sharp images can be easily achieved by the image stabilization with 5-stop[2] shake compensation

[IS OFF] Image is blurry and results loss of details due to camera shakes.

The Optical Image Stabilizer of EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM features three IS Modes to provide different shake compensation mechanisms for different scenarios. In addition to IS Mode 1 for normal shooting and IS Mode 2 for panning, IS Mode 3 is designed for sports photographers. Among these modes, IS Mode 3 is specially catered for capturing dynamic subjects with random movement, such as football players whose moving direction and speed are random. When the shutter release button is half-pressed in IS Mode 3, the IS compensation lens will be locked electrically at the center of the optical axis, image in the viewfinder moves more naturally without backlashes, while shake compensation keeps being calculated. Only when the shutter release button is fully pressed, the IS lens will be activated immediately and uses the data calculated to provide shake compensation during exposure.

Customizable Manual Focusing Speed by the New Electronic Focusing Ring
The EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM employs a rear focus system and Ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) with a new microprocessor which uses high performance CPU and newly-developed firmware to achieve high-speed, highly-accurate, smooth and silent autofocus for both photo and video shooting.

Compared to mechanical focus ring in previous models, the EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM employs an Electronic Focusing Ring design. The use of an electronic mechanism for the focusing ring allows focusing lens drive to be controlled electrically and the lens now allows photographers to change the manual focusing speed (the amount of focus shift per unit rotation angle) in order to accommodate a diverse range of photographic needs during manual focusing (MF). Manual focus drive using the conventional mechanical linkage results in a large amount of focus shift per unit rotation angle, sometimes making it difficult to fine tune the focus position especially when using a magnified display in Live View shooting. As a result, the advancement to an electronic focusing ring and the inclusion of a new “Manual Focus Speed Switch” offer three levels of manual focus speed selection (Focusing speed is fastest when set to 1) for photographers who need more flexible focus control. The lens is also equipped with a Full-Time Manual Focus function which can seamlessly switch from autofocus to manual focus. Photographers can fine tune the focus exactly the way they want.

Three levels of manual focusing speed are available to select

In addition, EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM is the first EF lens that provides up to two focus presets. Focus preset allows photographers to quickly focus on a pre-determined distance which is particularly useful when the shooting distance and angle are determined in advance, such as sports photography. With two Focus Presets available, photographers can now quickly focus on 2 separate preset shooting distances by simply turning the Playback Ring left or right (Focus Presets can be set to each rotation direction respectively). For instances, photographers can quickly switch the focus position for an athlete at the starting point and finish point in a running competition.

Power Focus (PF) mode is also equipped to provide professional and smooth focusing effect during video recording. By turning the Focus Playback Ring, manual focusing will be operated smoothly by the built-in USM (Ultrasonic Motor). The focusing speed can be operated at low or high speed, depending on how much the Focus Playback Ring is turned.

New Heat Shield Coating to Ensure the High Comfortability in High Temperature Conditions
A new heat shield white-colored coating developed by Canon is applied to the new EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM to reduce the rise of the lens temperature by increasing the reflectivity for infrared rays in sunlight. Compared to previous super-telephoto lens models, this highly reflective heat shield coating prevents the lens barrel from becoming hot while keeping it cooler and comfortable to use when shooting for long period of time under strong sunlight. The new lens hood ET-160 (WIII) also features this new heat shield coating to reduce temperature rises of the hood interior to achieve stable focusing under hot sun conditions.

In addition, a new lens barrel design is also employed to inhibit heat conductivity. A two-layered exterior and retaining barrel construction with optimized contact points can reduce the transfer of heat from exterior to the interior of the lens in high temperature by minimizing the heat conduction channels. The new heat shield coating and lens barrel design allows photographers to enjoy comfortable shooting experience even under hot sun condition.

Unbeatable Durability Designed to Withstand the Most Challenging Environment
EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM inherits the same level of durability and rugged construction as found on its predecessor while achieving a significant weight reduction. The mechanism of the carbon reinforced magnesium alloy lens barrel is also reworked to ensure vibrational shock resistance and durability are the same as the latest L-series lenses.  This lens features the dust-and-water-resistant design[3] to provide the durability that satisfies the strict demand of professional users, making it ideal for wildlife photographers working in outdoor environments, or motorsports photographers on the trackside grabbing intense racing shots. Fluorine coatings are applied on the foremost and rearmost lens surfaces to repel dust particles and water droplets. It also makes smears and fingerprints easy to remove without the use of lens cleaning fluid. A security slot is installed under the cap of the tripod mount lock nut for attaching a notebook wire-type security lock as an anti-theft precaution. The lens can be securely locked when photographer is away from the workplace.

    New Accessories for Improved Handling
A range of new accessories have also been introduced to enhance the shooting experience, including the bundled new Lens Soft Case LS600. This lightweight and easy handling shoulder-type soft case is at a size within the airline carry-on luggage standard and protects the lens during travel effectively.
