Embracing the “Light & Light” Concept, Six High-Specification RF Lenses in the Pipeline
and “EOS R NEXT 5-Year Upgrade Scheme” for Future Development

HONG KONG, 14 Feb 2018 — Since the launch of the new EOS R Imaging System with Canon’s first Full Frame Mirrorless Camera EOS R and four newly developed RF Lenses back in September 2018, its innovative design philosophy, unprecedented image quality, enhanced usability and high-quality lenses have been highly received by Canon users and photo enthusiasts alike. In order to respond to the needs of a wider range of users, Canon further expands its EOS R System with the introduction of the new entry-level compact Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera EOS RP and six high-specification RF Lenses under development in full swing, including three f/2.8 L Zoom Lenses designed for professional photographers. The expansion has laid the groundwork for future development of the EOS R System of Mirrorless Cameras and RF Lenses at different levels. Canon has also been listen to EOS R users’ feedbacks actively, new features are added to EOS R through planned firmware update to meet the needs of users.  At the same time, Canon understands the concerns our customers may have in switching to a totally new imaging system like the EOS R. To this end, Canon Hongkong today announces a new “EOS R NEXT 5-Year Upgrade Scheme”, existing EOS R or EOS RP users can enjoy priority offers to upgrade to newer EOS R models in the next 5 years upon completion of registration, as a testament to the company’s determination in the development of the EOS R System. Designed for first-time full frame users in the quest of ultimate compactness, the new compact Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera EOS RP adopting the concept of “Light & Light” makes the perfect option for an affordable walk-around full frame camera to capture everyday stories with exceptional images. The concept of “Light & Light” refers not only to the EOS RP’s mere weight of 440g (approximately the weight of a cup of coffee[1]), it also implies the art of recording everyday moments with the EOS RP through light. The EOS RP employs the next-generation RF Mount, taking full advantage of this fully electronic controlled lens mount with a large 54mm internal diameter, a short flange distance of 20mm, a short back focus distance and a high capacity, high speed data communication system between camera and lens. The mirrorless design also makes possible a smaller and lighter camera. After incorporating a full frame image sensor, an electronic viewfinder, a side-opening vari-angle monitor and a comfortable hand grip, the body of the EOS RP only weighs 440g, which is approximately the weight of a cup of coffee[1], making it the lightest Canon full frame digital camera ever. In addition to everyday shooting, the EOS RP is also the perfect lightweight companion for users shooting various photographic topics such as portraits, travel and street snaps.

With the EOS RP, first-time full frame users can experience the advantages of renowned faithful color reproduction, high image quality and easy usability unique to Canon’s cameras. The EOS RP incorporates an approximately 26.2-megapixel Canon Full Frame CMOS image sensor and the latest DIGIC 8 digital image processor. With the advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the EOS RP achieves the world’s fastest autofocus speed of 0.05 seconds[2] and a focus area of approximately 100% x 88% with maximum 4,779 selectable AF point positions. As for the new features, the Eye Detection AF of the EOS RP is now made selectable during Servo AF and Movie Servo AF shooting as well. With this feature which helps track and focus on the eyes of the moving subject during photo and movie shooting, photographers can concentrate more on the composition and the interaction with the subject when taking portraits. Another new function Bracket Focusing takes multiple shots at different focal distances automatically in one go, allowing users to superimpose focuses using computer software to create a final image with everything in focus from foreground to background. In addition to the wide range of high-quality RF Lenses, the EOS RP can use any lens in Canon’s rich EF and EF-S lens line-up with Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, thereby expanding the possibilities of image creation.

Leveraging the company’s leading optical technologies and rich expertise in manufacturing high-quality lenses through the years, Canon at the same time announces six high-specification RF Lenses being under development in full swing, and are set to release in 2019. These lenses include three professional f/2.8 L zoom lenses namely RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM; two f/1.2 large-aperture L portrait lenses RF 85mm f/1.2L USM and RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS; and a 10x travel zoom lens RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM. These additions bring the number of RF Lenses to surge to ten in total. Looking forward, the RF Lens System will continue to expand to cope with different professional imaging needs that arise. By utilizing the maximum freedom of optical design brought by the RF Mount to the fullest, Canon is now able to design more advanced specifications and deliver lenses with higher image quality which are previously unachievable.

The Lightweight EOS RP Full Frame Mirrorless Digital Camera will be available for pre-sale starting from 19 February 2019, and the official sale date is 27 February 2019.
