Canon’s New EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Professional Telephoto Zoom Lens
Featuring Newly Added Air Sphere Coating Anti-reflection Technology, Inherited Superior Image Quality and Unparalleled Reliability of L-Series lens in Challenging Environment

HONG  KONG, 22 August 2018 - Canon today announces the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM professional telephoto zoom lens,  the  successor to the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II USM highly acclaimed by professional photographers. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM is an ideal telephoto zoom lens for professional photographers who shoot with EOS-1D and 5D series DSLR cameras. It inherits the renowned optical design with 1 fluorite lens and 5 UD lenses from the existing model with Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology newly added to pursue even higher image quality by further reducing lens flares and ghosting.  Its constant large f/2.8 aperture not only produces great background blurring expression and facilitates low light shooting, it can also fully utilize professional EOS DSLR cameras’ autofocus performance for faster and higher precision autofocus.

With the same high quality built, ruggedness and unparalleled reliability of Canon L-series lenses, the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM is designed to meet the demand of professional photographers and advanced amateurs and is suitable for different photographic genres including wedding, press event, portrait, landscape, wildlife and sports photography. It also forms an appealing lineup with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM Ultra-wide angle zoom lens and EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM standard zoom lenses with the same f/2.8 aperture.

Improved Optical Performance With Air Sphere Coating (ASC) Anti-Reflection Technology
Being Canon’s flagship telephoto zoom lens, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM achieve even higher image quality by featuring the proven Air Sphere Coating (ASC) and optimizing all conventional lens coating to further suppress lens flare and ghosting due to reflection. ASC is a combination of the conventional vapor-deposited multi-layer coatings with an ultra-low refractive index outermost layer. The ultra-low refractive index layer is a film consisting of silicon dioxide and a certain percentage of air. The resulting structural refractive index provides an ultra-low refractive index significantly lower than that of the existing vapor-deposited coatings. This can effectively reduce ghosting and flare that cannot be prevented with conventional vapor-deposited multi-layer coatings. ASC has excellent anti-reflective effects particularly with respect to incident light that enters vertically. The result is significant suppression of flare and ghosting in backlit environment at a level not possible with ordinary coating. It helps to provide cleaner photographs with fewer distracting reflective effects in the image.

The EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS III USM inherits the renowned 23 lens elements in 19 groups optical design from its predecessors with 1 fluorite lens element and 5 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens elements to ensure excellent correction of chromatic aberration and high resolution, high contrast across whole image area throughout the entire zoom range even at the maximum aperture of f/2.8. This lens is ideal for a professional photographer who requires a high-quality telephoto zoom lens for fine and accurate detail with high resolution when shooting portrait, wedding, event, sports or even landscape images.

With its 1.2m minimum focusing distance and 0.21 x maximum magnifications, this lens is also highly suitable for intimate portraits, headshots and detail work.  Photographer can get closer to the subject and create more impressive close-up shots with large aperture.

On the other hand, the lens’ focal length can be extended instantly with the use of Extender EF 1.4x III or EF 2x III to further expand the shooting possibility. The high versatility makes the lens the perfect companion for photographers demanding high image quality as well as the flexibility to cater to a wide range of scenes and compositions with just one lens.

Constant f/2.8 Large Aperture and 3.5-Stop Optical Image Stabilization for Better Low-Light Photography
The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM features an incredibly bright zoom with a constant aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. This enables the photographer to emphasize pin-sharp subjects against a silky smooth, out-of-focus background together with the lens 8-blade circular aperture.

The f/2.8 aperture also plays an important role in AF performance of EOS DSLR cameras such as the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS 5D mark IV. It allows a large amount of light entering the AF sensor of EOS DSLR cameras, unleashing the fastest and the highest precision AF performance from their f/2.8-sensitive AF points. Hence, the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens series is always highly recommended by news and professional sports photographers who are always required to shoot in dim light environment.

The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM adopts an inner focusing system design and a ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor), working in conjunction with a high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithms, these allow the lens to achieve high-speed, highly-accurate, smooth and silent autofocus for both photo and video shooting. Full-time manual focus is also available for fine focus adjustment even when AF is engaged.

In addition to large aperture, Image stabilization (IS) also plays a crucial part in telephoto photography. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM features an optical image stabilizer system that provides shake compensation for up to 3.5 stop shutter speed2. There are 2 IS modes to meet different scenarios – “IS Mode 1” which corrects handshaking in both vertical and horizontal directions is designed for shooting still subjects whereas “IS Mode 2” which provides shake compensation in either horizontal or vertical direction is designed to shoot moving subjects by panning. The IS function allows photographers to shoot clear images more easily with the telephoto focal length in low-light situations or set a lower ISO with a slower shutter speed to improve the image quality.

Unbeatable Durability Designed to Withstand The Most Challenging Environment
Under its new white minimalism exterior design which features in the latest L-series telephoto zoom lens, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM retains the renowned reliability, durability and rugged construction of its predecessors, including the strengthened lens barrel and parts connection construction and the use of magnesium alloys for main components. The excellent dust and water resistance design1 is also retained. To further enhance operability, fluorine coating is newly added to the foremost and rearmost lens surfaces to repel dust particles and water droplets. It also makes smears and fingerprints easy to remove without the use of lens cleaning fluid. Photographers can rely on the lens to perform in vastly challenging environments and provide the durability that satisfies the strict demand of professional users, making it ideal for photographers working in outdoor environments, or sports photographers on the sideline grabbing action shots of the big game.
